How to Fire a Bad Client

Bad clients ruins lives.

Bad clients are abusive, belittle, talk down on you and lack professional business behavior.

Bad clients won’t pay your fees and/or delay the negotiated fee.

Here are the Signs of a Bad Client:

– big dreams, no money

– lots of initial meetings, no contract

– demands your timelines, misses theirs

– believes they’re king, and you’re pawn

– bad mouths past colleagues, you’re next

– disrespectful, dishonest, disorganized, total jerks

Bad clients will ruin your mental health and take your financial health.

Fire Bad Clients

It might be scary but you can do it.

Here’s how:

STEP 1:

BALANCE YOUR INVOICE SCHEDULE

Make sure that your contract details your invoicing schedule and keeps your payments balanced with work completed. This makes it easy to sort out the financial details when you fire a client.

STEP 2:

PUT A CANCELLATION CLAUSE IN YOUR CONTRACT

This clause will empower you to cancel a project and fire a client when the need arises.

Here’s a sample Cancellation Clause:

“Either party may terminate this engagement by providing not less than Thirty (30) days written notice to the other party. In the event of cancellation of this engagement, all jobs paid for shall be transferred to the client. Client shall pay for all work and expenses based on the contract price and expenses already incurred up to the date of the cancellation”

NOTE: this is a sample clause and should not be used without consulting a Lawyer.

STEP 3:

HAVE A VALID REASON TO FIRE THE CLIENT

Here are a few valid reasons to fire a client:

– breaking a contract

– unethical behavior

– abuse and bullying

– unwilling or unable to pay

– unwilling to collaborate

STEP 4:

MAKE THE DECISION TO FIRE THE CLIENT AND EXECUTE

Armed with a Cancellation Clause in your contract and a valid reason you are ready.

Here’s a sample draft to use when firing a client:

Dear Sir/Madam

We have determined that it is no longer in our best interest to continue working on this project. As per the Cancellation Clause in our contract, we are notifying you that Thirty (30) days from now we will discontinue working on this project. On that date, we will invoice you for the work completed due in receipt payment. We will deliver all files to you. If it is your preference that we discontinue the project immediately we will accept those terms and upon receipt of all payment we will deliver all files to you.

Thank you

You’ll never regret firing a bad client but you will regret keeping them.
